PhD: Programmable luminescent tags for eco-efficient photonic devices

Closes 1 February 2027 | Start: 1 October 2027 | Fully funded (UKRI stipend and fees), Home fee only

Project reference: ReNU+27/SE/EPM/ETHERINGTON Programme: EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Renewable Energy Northeast Universities Plus (ReNU+), 4 years Deadline: Monday 1 February 2027, 11:59pm Start date: Friday 1 October 2027 Eligibility: Home fee students only

The project

UV light cures the coatings, inks and adhesives in solar panels, electronics and everyday products, and a wrong dose means either early failure or wasted energy. Yet today’s sensors are single-use. What if they could be reusable and compostable after use?

Borrowing structural features from quinine, the natural compound behind the glow of tonic water under UV light, we will synthesise entirely new molecules that glow once a set UV dose is received. After light exposure of a certain dose, the oxygen around these molecules is photochemically consumed, and they start to glow. You will work with PRUUVE GmbH, a spin-out from TU Dresden that already sells UV sensors based on this principle.

Your research will include:

  • Synthesis: design and synthesise quinine-inspired molecules that glow across the visible spectrum, using modular synthetic routes.
  • Characterisation: study how small changes in molecular structure alter the colour, duration and oxygen sensitivity of the glow.
  • Collaboration: work with experts in materials simulation to link molecular structure to useful properties.
  • Devices: incorporate the most promising molecules into working programmable luminescent tags.
  • Placement: test your tags in prototype devices at TU Dresden and PRUUVE GmbH.

Real-world benefits

The research could support more reliable manufacturing of next-generation solar modules and cut electronic and plastic waste. It contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) and 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).

Skills and training

You will receive training in advanced organic synthesis, optical spectroscopy and device fabrication, plus data analysis and science communication. Your placement will show you how a laboratory discovery becomes a commercial product in a start-up, with entrepreneurial training. HORIBA UK advises on measurement methods and industry careers. You will be supported by a team that values mentoring and an inclusive research culture.

Who we’re looking for

We are looking for graduates in chemistry, materials science or a related subject who enjoy synthetic laboratory work. Experience of organic synthesis from a project, placement or job is strongly preferred. We will train you in everything else, from spectroscopy to device fabrication, so no physics or engineering background is needed. Above all, bring your curiosity and motivation.

Entry requirements: a 2:1 (or equivalent), with a preference for first class honours, or a Masters (preference for Merit or above). A 2:2 may be considered alongside relevant work experience or skills. An appropriate IELTS score is required if applicable. You cannot apply if you are currently engaged in doctoral study, and you must be able to commit to campus-based study.

Home fee status: you must be a UK national (meeting residency requirements), or have settled status, pre-settled status (meeting residency requirements), or indefinite leave to remain or enter.

Funding

The studentship includes full tuition fees and a stipend at UKRI rates (£21,805 per year for 2026/27 full-time study). Part-time study (0.6 FTE) is also available, with a stipend of £13,083 per year and full tuition fees.

How to apply

Further details can be found in the ReNU+ website using the Apply now button below and searching for the project reference ReNU+27/SE/EPM/ETHERINGTON.

ReNU+ studentships are awarded competitively between projects at Northumbria University, and there are fewer studentships than projects advertised.
