1. Contributions to the generation of knowledge

Key contributions

  • From phosphorescence to delayed fluorescence in one step: tuning photophysical properties by quaternisation of an sp 2-hybridised nitrogen atom (Journal of Materials Chemistry C, 2022). First demonstration of N-alkylation imbuing TADF in molecules that originally showed room-temperature phosphorescence.
  • Simultaneous enhancement of thermally activated delayed fluorescence and photoluminescence quantum yield via homoconjugation (Journal of Materials Chemistry C, 2022). Demonstrated that homoconjugation can significantly affect delayed emission processes as well as the photoluminescence quantum yield.
  • Modulation of charge transfer by N-alkylation to control photoluminescence energy and quantum yield (Chemical Science, 2020). Showed how N-alkylation enhances the fluorescence yield of quinine-based compounds, opening a pathway to new emitters for displays.
  • Persistent Dimer Emission in Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Materials (The Journal of Physical Chemistry C, 2019). Showed how dimer formation in TADF compounds affects colour purity and the TADF process in OLEDs, of significant interest to industry.
  • Excited-State Aromatic Interactions in the Aggregation-Induced Emission of Molecular Rotors (Journal of the American Chemical Society, 2017). Demonstrated that simple molecules can have significant and unexpected intra- and intermolecular interactions that completely change their emissive behaviour.
  • Regio- and conformational isomerization critical to design of efficient thermally-activated delayed fluorescence emitters (Nature Communications, 2017). Showed the significance of conformation for the TADF mechanism: one conformer displays TADF and the other does not, severely affecting device performance.
  • Revealing the spin–vibronic coupling mechanism of thermally activated delayed fluorescence (Nature Communications, 2016). The first experimental evidence of the spin-vibronic coupling mechanism and its influence on TADF.
